Marvin A. Meyer, 64, of Des Moines, formerly of Donnellson and Denmark, Iowa, died at 4:25 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.

Marvin was born on May 27, 1952 in Keokuk, Iowa; the son of Bernice L. and Arthur H. Meyer, Jr. He graduated from Central Lee High School in 1970 and from the commercial cooking program at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IA in 1971. He married Nancy J. Poggenpohl on May 13, 1978 in Donnellson.

Marvin worked as a commercial cook at various restaurants, including The New Inn at Lake Okoboji, and Baker’s Cafeteria in Des Moines. He last worked in the cafeterias at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines for 21 years.

His passions in life were cooking 24/7 (even while on vacation), gardening, gathering walnuts and other wild foods, hunting, fishing, playing guitar, and sharing funny stories. He attended Plymouth United Church of Christ in Des Moines.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Nancy Meyer, Des Moines; his sister, Marlene Meyer, Grimes; his mother-in-law, Helen Poggenpohl, Des Moines; his aunt-in-law, Betty Mackin, Des Moines; his brother-in-law, Steve (Linda) Poggenpohl, Evans, Colorado; his nephews, Preston Poggenpohl, Tooele, UT and Paul (Patty) Poggenpohl and their daughters, Megan and Abigail, Enid, OK; 2 grandnieces, and other family. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA on with visitation on Thursday, March 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. and the funeral service on Friday, March 31 at 10:00 a.m. with Preston Poggenpohl presiding. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

A second celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Union Park Health Services, 2401 E 8th Street in Des Moines, with Steve Poggenpohl officiating.
