A celebration of life will be held Monday, September 25, 2023, 11:30 am, at Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman, Iowa, with interment to follow at Lincoln Cemetery. A visitation will take place at the church prior to the service at 10:00 am.

William Edward Frederick, Jr. was born December 18, 1929, to William and Edith (Satterlee) Frederick, Sr., at their home in Elkhart, IA. He was raised in Elkhart and graduated from White Oak High School in the class of 1947.

On May 12, 1951, Bill married the love of his life, Carolyn Joyce Thompson. They were married for 66 beautiful years, before her passing in December of 2017. Shortly after their wedding, Bill was drafted into the Army. Carolyn followed him to Oklahoma and Kansas until he was sent to Germany. During his deployment, she returned to Iowa to live with her parents, in her childhood home. Bill returned from deployment in 1953 and was transitioned to the Army Reserves until his discharge in 1959.

Bill and Carolyn were blessed with a daughter, Vicki Lynn, in 1952. They made their home in the Elkhart and Huxley areas. Bill farmed with his dad in Elkhart until his dad passed in 1954. They moved into his childhood home where he continued to farm his family land and he also helped his father-in-law farm in Huxley. He purchased the Huxley farm in the 60s and he farmed there until he retired in the mid-90s. In addition to his time spent in the fields, he enjoyed raising feeder pigs and learning to do surgery on the farm animals.
The couple enjoyed traveling. They took trips to Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro, Spain, Mexico, and Canada, as well as two cruises that took them to San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. Martin, Haiti, Jamaica, and Santo Domingo. They loved their yearly trips to Las Vegas, NV. Bill also took many fishing trips with his wonderful friends to various places in Canada, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Bill loved people and everyone loved him. He never knew a stranger. He had an incredible sense of humor and was quite a jokester. One would always have a smile on their face after being around him. He was so proud of his family and shared their successes with anyone who would listen. He was blessed with two granddaughters, six great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren who he adored, and they adored him. He also loved the great outdoors. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, foraging mushrooms, gardening, mowing (his lines were always perfect, and his lawn free of all weeds) and tending to his crops and farmland to ensure they were in pristine condition. Bill was also a committed member of Salem United Church of Christ in Alleman, Iowa, where he enjoyed serving the church in many capacities. He also served on the co-op board. He and Carolyn enjoyed square dancing together and partook in two card clubs with their friends for more than 50 years.

Bill will be deeply missed by his daughter, Vicki (Ike) Moeckly, Ankeny; granddaughters, Gina (Brian) Wasko, Ankeny, and Alyson (Steve) Whalen, Coon Rapids, MN; great-grandchildren, Chloe Whalen, Carter Whalen, Max Vernon, Colette Whalen, Cooper Pratt and Stone Pratt; step great-grandchildren, Rosie, Maddie and Owen Wasko; sister, Patty (John) Schiefer; brother, Raymond (Linda) Frederick; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edith Frederick, Sr.; wife, Carolyn Frederick; sisters, Geraldine Bagley and Shirley Barkley; parents-in-law, Leonard and Anna Thompson; brothers-in-law, Richard Bagley and Billie Barkley; sisters-in-law, Audrey Miller and Eleanor Goetsch; niece, Sue Ann Foster; great-nephew, Christopher Miller.

Bill’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and the wonderful, loving caregivers at Mill Pond. He enjoyed six plus years in Assisted Living where he made many friends, including the staff. He loved showing off his collections in his apartment to all those who stopped by to visit. He loved each and every one of you, and you reciprocated his adoration.
