Roger Hill, age 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 21, 2024. He was born the son of Harold and Dorothy (Borg) Hill on April 6, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Roger graduated from Saydel High School in 1965. He later attended Drake University and Grandview University, where he majored in journalism.
At the age of 21, Roger joined the military and served as a Specialist 5th Class in the US Army from 1969 to 1975. During his service, he was stationed in South Korea and was honored with the Meritorious Service Medal, reflecting his dedication and excellence. Roger was incredibly proud of his military service, a testament to his commitment and bravery.
He began his career at Firestone and later dedicated his time as a volunteer for the Ankeny Fire Department. Roger then worked at John Deere as a quality control supervisor until his retirement. After retiring, he began working part-time at TPC Deere Run Golf Course in Sylvis, Illinois. He was actively involved with the Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, serving on the board of directors and most recently as the board president. Roger also served as president of the Waterfront Townhome Association.
He was a proud Mason in the Des Moines area and long-time member of United Methodist Church. Roger married the love of his life and best friend, Delores, in 1973 in Des Moines, Iowa. The two moved to Bettendorf, Iowa in 1999, and eventually returning to Des Moines in 2016.
Roger was an avid football fan, always cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He had a love for writing, often buying blank cards and filling the entire space with heartfelt messages for family and friends. Thoughtful by nature, Roger appreciated all types of music and found joy in its diversity. He had a deep love for animals, especially his dogs, Marquee and Lilla, who were treated like family along with his granddogs. Roger’s other love was his Jeep, a 1960’s CJ7, which he meticulously cared for and cherished. His legacy of service, faith, and dedication will be remembered by all who knew him. Roger will be deeply missed.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 51 years Delores “Dee” Hill, daughter Tiffany (Darrin) Clouse, sister Judy (Jack) Davidson, his nephew, and several cousins.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Graveside Service will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
