Rebecca "Becky" E. Shreffler

Rebecca “Becky” E. Shreffler was born in Des Moines on July 9, 1947. She passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on July 8, 2024.

Becky was a lifelong Southsider. She was a teacher for Des Moines Public Schools for 35 years and substitute taught for several years after that. She went above and beyond her role as an educator. Becky made sure to give extra attention to the students who were struggling with reading. She enjoyed traveling and attending plays at the Civic Center. Becky was accomplished at cross-stitching and was a dedicated bookworm. She was a very active member of Wakonda Christian Church, rarely missing a Sunday service.

Becky is survived by her husband of 52 years, Donald; children, Jennifer (Tim) Mooers and Hieu (Melissa) Shreffler; grandchildren, Danielle and John Mooers and Madilyn, Delaney and Jace Shreffler; sister, Mary (Dennis) Lewis; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melville and Dorothy Gowdey; son, John Donald Shreffler; and her brother who passed away in infancy, John Gowdey.

The family will greet friends on Monday, July 15, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 16th at 10:00 a.m. at Wakonda Christian Church, 3938 Fleur Drive. Becky will be laid to rest at Bear Creek Cemetery in Earlham, Iowa.
