Peltiah "Ward" Leete
June 14, 1936 — February 10, 2024
Peltiah “Ward” Leete IX, 87, went to be with Jesus on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at his home in Des Moines, Iowa. Born in Des Moines on June 14, 1936, to Pelatiah Leete VIII and Anna Monahan, Ward dedicated his life to love, service, and family.
A devoted husband, Ward married Janet Fees on July 23, 1955, and together they raised four children in the Des Moines area. A pillar of the community, Ward actively participated in various churches, most recently New Hope Assembly of God in Urbandale.
Ward retired from the Des Moines Metro Transit Authority (MTA) where his skills earned him recognition as Driver of the Year twice. He found joy in activities such as golfing, billiards, and fishing. He possessed excellent handyman skills, adept at repairing broken items and painting walls not only for his family and friends but also for the Assemblies of God Campground buildings. Woodworking was a passion for Ward, who crafted pieces of furniture and heartfelt gifts for loved ones over the years. This includes cradles for each of his children, with some still being used by today’s generations.
Ward’s commitment to the community extended beyond his professional life. He volunteered his time coaching youth baseball/softball, as well as serving as a leader in the Royal Rangers and the Assembly of God churches. A proud father and grandfather, Ward attended countless activities to support his children and grandchildren.
Ward is survived by his beloved wife, Janet, and their four children: Laurie (Danny) Hews of Clive, Iowa; Mike (Dianna) of Crestview, Florida; David (Robyn) of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Randy (Rhea) of Walford, Iowa. His legacy lives on through ten grandchildren: Steve (Michele) Hews, Rachel (David) Faidley, Tara (Patrick) Honkomp, Nicole (Ross) Hildebrand, Jeremiah “JD” Hews, Nathan (Shannon) Leete, Jessica (Bradley) Painter, Tracy (Chuck) Mash, Abigail (Aaron) Milton, and Tyler (Lauren) Leete; one step-grandson, Jason Swearingen; 19 great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include siblings Elmer Dean Monahan, Pam Martin, Gerry Leete, Terry Leete, Shirley Dowell, and Sharon Zigo, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Ward was preceded in death by his parents Pelatiah VIII and Billie Leete, and Anna and Elmer Monahan, and siblings Beverly Ashley, Peggy Steen, Anna Faye Saffell, Calvin “CD” Leete, Craig Leete, Jack Monahan, and Donald Monahan. Ward leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and craftsmanship that will be cherished by all who knew him.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the support from friends, neighbors, and the community during this difficult time. Ward’s impact on our lives will be forever remembered and cherished.
Family will greet guests on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at New Hope Assembly of God, 4425 70th Street, Urbandale, Iowa 50322. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 10:30 a.m., at the church. Burial will follow services at Pine Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Iowa Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Ward was a wonderful & kind man. When we moved to Des Moines & became neighbors to Ward & Janet we soon found out what a true blessing he was in our lives. Ward was very generous with his time, his help, & his knowledge. He taught you lessons and you didnt realize he was doing it. He was a beautiful example of a True Christian for us and our children. We are truly thankful for knowing him. He will be missed.

Janet and family
So sorry for your loss and great joy for Wards journey home. Ward was a wonderful God fearing man who loved his wife and children to the utmost. We are so glad that we were able to get to know Ward and call him our friend and mentor in our walk with the Lord. I, Tom, had so much fun as we played several rounds of golf together. Ward was an amazing servant that was always there pitching in wherever he was needed. We want you to know that we will be in prayer during this time of saying goodbye or see you later. Our God is an awesome God.

Janet and family,
I'm so sorry to hear of Wards passing
but I know he is with Jesus. He and my Dad (Trenton Jennings) worked at the MTA together and were good friends. Ward will be missed. We all look forward to that great reunion day in our Heavenly home. Our prayers are with you all now and in the days and months ahead.

Ward was one of the most generous people Ive ever met. We lived across the street from Ward and Janet for years. A word that comes to mind is selflessalways thinking of others before himself. If a neighbor needed help with anything, he always came running. He helped us with numerous projects and wanted nothing in return. Ward was so talentedan amazing handyman. Our world needs more people like Ward. He will be missed.
