Matthew Thoma
June 01, 1994 — July 30, 2024
Matthew Michael Thoma, 30, was born June 1, 1994 in Newton, Iowa, the son of Douglas and Patricia (Grady) Thoma. He passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.
Matt worked for the State of Iowa as a Paralegal and previously as a court clerk. He was very proud of his work there, along with the friendships he made. Matt had a wide circle of friends whom he loved and cherished deeply. Matt was known for being the life of the party, he had a unique ability to make a friend within seconds of meeting someone. He was beloved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He enjoyed swimming, hiking, spending time outside and reading fantasy books. Matt enjoyed good music, and no one topped his favorites Beyoncé and Gaga. He always looked forward to trivia night, and was known for his amazing cooking skills - compliments of his love for the Food Network tv shows. Matt was the life of the party and loved being surrounded by his family, friends and the love of his life, Damitri Taylor. He was an animal lover, especially when it came to his kitty, Rizzo.
In addition to Damitri Taylor, Matt is survived by his parents, Doug and Patricia; grandmothers, Jean Thoma and Bea Grady; several aunts, uncles and cousins; other loving relatives and many special friends. He was an exchange student in Brazil and loved his host family, the Maregas. Matt’s family also hosted several exchange students who he considered his siblings – Donna from Croatia, Heli from Brazil and Luana from Brazil.
Matt was preceded in death by his grandfathers, John “Jack” Thoma and Bernard Grady; grandmother, Mary (Dan) Vasa; uncles, Scott Thoma and Michael Grady; and aunts, Jan and Nanny Jo.
Cremation has occurred and there will be a Celebration of Life at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Jasper Winery, 2400 George Flagg Parkway, Des Moines, Iowa 50321.
