Service Details

Janet Elizabeth Michels passed from this earth into God’s hands on January 23, 2024, at the Altoona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Altoona, Iowa.

Janet began her life in Davenport, Iowa, on August 8, 1945, as the youngest child born to William and Jean (Stepanski) Kopp. She was raised with one older brother and two older sisters in their childhood home at 1435 West 7th Street, attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and graduated from Davenport Central High School.
Being the creative person she was, Janet enjoyed many projects to keep her hands busy. She decorated towels, napkins and pillowcases using Tri-Chem fabric paints in the 1970’s, refinished antiques in the 1980’s, completed many needle point pillows in the 1990’s, and in recent years, crocheted blankets as thank you, birthday, baby and wedding gifts until her hands and eyes grew tired. Her crocheted blankets were especially treasured by all who received them. One can also find many of her refinished antiques in the home she shared with her husband, Steven.

Janet also enjoyed reading books and catching up with family and friends. She truly looked forward to the annual family gatherings for Thanksgiving where she could talk to young and old as if no time had passed.

Janet is survived by her husband of 44 years Steven Michels, daughter Chris (Jim) Scatena, stepson James (Nickie) Michels, and stepdaughters Teresa Michels and Diana Michels. She also leaves behind her four grandchildren Emma Lamb, Evan Michels, Michael Scatena, and Kyle Scatena, her three great-grandchildren Lucas Lamb, Mollie Lamb, and Alvin Michels, sister Valerie (Richard) Verbeke, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother William (Bill) Kopp and sister Eileen Sloat.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in the name of Janet Michels may be made to the Ss. John & Paul Building Faith Expansion Fund or the Altoona EMS who worked tirelessly to provide medical assistance for Janet during her final hour.

Family will greet friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church, 1401 First Avenue S in Altoona. Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. also at the church.
