Bert Owen Borg
October 16, 1930 — January 20, 2024
Bert Owen Borg of Des Moines died peacefully alongside his family in his home on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Bert lived a long, zest-filled life marked by an enduring faith, a love for family, and many friends.
Bert served two years in the US Army and then began a 35-year career with the telephone company. In taking an early retirement, he had many years of enjoying life in his motorhome. Bert and wife Nancy crossed the country to visit their children and grandchildren. They spent winters in Florida. After Nancy died in 2006, Bert continued traveling throughout the year. He visited family and appreciated time as a Winter Texan in Brownsville. Bert loved to camp with his friends and family.
Bert was an avid bicycle rider. He rode thousands of miles alone and with his friends, the OOFPA. He amazed everyone by continuing to ride beyond his 93rd birthday.
Bert loved Jesus and trusted Him as his Savior at a young age. He grew up attending Union Park Baptist Church and was a member there for over 80 years. Bert started every day in God’s Word.
Bert was proud of his family. Every one of them knew they were loved and special. He could state the first and middle names of over fifty children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. He would stay connected through visits, calls, and text messages.
Bert was born during the Depression and didn’t mind a day-old cup of Folgers to chase down a cookie or cinnamon roll. As a coffee lover, he was his own unique blend. He never met a person he didn’t consider a friend. He won people over with his unique laugh and outgoing personality. His closest friends described him as a partner, mentor, godly role model, and inspiration.
Bert was a testament to how to get the most out of life. He loved God, he loved people, and he never stopped moving so as to revel in every moment. He would often say, “We are never promised the next 5 seconds,” and he lived like he meant it.
Bert was preceded in death by his wife Nancy Joy Borg. He is survived by his siblings, Lee Borg and Doris Highsmith, and his children Susan Hawbaker (Dan), Jeff Borg, Linda Shannon (Shawn), Scott Borg (Marcia), thirteen grandchildren and their spouses, 22 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
A memorial service will be on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. The family will greet guests following the service from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

The Hope for life children's village family in Eswatini Africa,is so sorry to hear of the demise of grandpa Bert Owen Borg.He is one of the people who supported the dream of the existence of Hope for life children's village, which is a home for abandoned, orphaned and vulnerable children. He also supported the home using his own resources in making Christmas celebrations memorable to the kids. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire Borg family. We hope that even though your world may seem so dark right now,you are able to see some light in the memories you shared with him. Please be comforted by the fact that he is in a better place right now, where there is no pain,no sorrow and no worries. As children of God,we have hope as 1 Tessalonians 4:13 - 14 says"And now brothers and sisters,we want you to know about the believers who have died so you will not grieve like those who have no hope.14.For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again,we also believe that when Jesus returns again God will bring back with him the believers who he have died."Thinking of you in these difficult times. We love you all.May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Borg Family,
I met Bert through the few times I joined the OOFPAs biking and camping. He was so full of life it was easy to be joyful with him. I instantly knew he was a God-fearing man who was a friend to all. I wished I could introduce him to my mother the first time I met him, but she had Alzhimers. He was the type of person she would have enjoyed if she didn't have that disease. Bert was amazing!

Dear Borg Family,
I worked with Bert at the telephone Company. Bert was always cheerful ands never without a smile. At that time it was well known in the telephone group that Bert knew where the best pies were in the small communities around Des Moines. While making the rounds at the CDO's Bert would make sure to be at his favorite pie town. Bert always made the day a little brighter for those around him. Blessings to his family.

Maybe this is a 40 year old story but he is famous in my mind. I was Berts friend in the bicycle business. One day he came in the bike shop to shop for a pair of gloves.. he left that day with gloves and a new bicycle. Weve had so many special Bert Borg laughs through the years. I certainly learned a bunch about caring customers from this man. RIP Bert ❤

Im so sad to learn of Berts passing. What a GREAT guy. Always positive, always on the move. I enjoyed seeing Bert being happy watching ballgames at Beaverdale Little League, riding his bike around the neighborhood, and then the stories he shared from his travels in the RV. I will miss seeing him around the neighborhood. Rest in peace, Bert. And blessings on the Borg / Shannon family.
