Arthur William Matlage

Arthur William Matlage, 95, passed away at his home on April 4, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Arthur was born October 18, 1928, to Frank and Minnie (Cole) Matlage. He served in the US Navy. Arthur married Viola Jean Bothwell and the couple was blessed with four daughters. He worked for the Forestry of Des Moines and later as a plumber for Meredith Corp. Arthur was a member of the Plumber’s Union. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping. Arthur’s favorite pastime was collecting, tumbling and polishing rocks.

Arthur is survived by his wife of 73 years, Viola Matlage; daughters, Jeanette (Donald) Steger, Sandy (Greg) Winchell and Anna (Phil) Heiser; sister, Dorothy Althoff; brothers, Fred Matlage, Lester Matlage and Frank Matlage; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Terry Matlage; sister, Helen Gilge; and his brother, Clem Matlage.

The family will greet friends Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 11 am to 1 pm at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Arthur will be laid to rest at Avon Cemetery at a later date.
