William "Billy" Bowers

William “Billy” Dale Bowers, 92, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. He was born March 31, 1931 in Runnells, Iowa to his parents, William and Lois Bowers in Runnells.

Billy graduated from Runnells High School in 1949. He married Carolyn Bowers on November 20, 1954 and they had two beautiful children from this union, Brad and Brenda. They were members of the Runnells Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served as Bishop Agent to the church and was an avid “to the penny accountant”. He and his wife, Carolyn, also helped with the Candleridge Apartment elderly resident’s ministry for many years. In 2000, they started attending Adventure Life Church in Altoona.

Billy attended the American Institute of Business (AIB) and earned a degree in accounting. He worked for Interchange Power until they dissolved and then for Ruan Transport for 35 years before retiring in 1993. Billy took great pride in his work and was a dedicated employee. He gave many years of service to the community of Runnells, serving as mayor for 17 years. During his tenure, he helped with the sewer system installation and the construction of the Runnells Community Center and Runnells Area Park. Billy really enjoyed visiting with community residents as mayor and was also a member of the Runnells Lions Club since 1956 in which he held a perfect attendance record for many years.

Billy was a devoted father, grandfather, and husband. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and trapping. He also enjoyed photography and carpentry. Billy was a gifted Mr. Fix-it and often helped his son, Brad, with projects. He was an avid sports fan. He played softball for several years with the “Percy Iowa” team that was coached by Kels Walker. He was always rooting for his Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Carolyn; son, Brad (Jodi) Bowers; daughter, Brenda Anderson; grandchildren, Bryan Bowers and Lindsey Anderson; brother, Max Bowers; and a host of other loving family members.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lois Bowers.

Family will greet friends Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, in Altoona, with a memorial service to begin at 2 p.m.
