It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tom, a beloved father, brother, son, and friend, who left us on September 26, 2024. He lived a life filled with love, humor, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends.

Tom was born October 15, 1961, to Paul and Barbara Lansing. From a young age, Tom was an independent go-getter, always finding a new hobby. His vibrant and blunt personality made him friends everywhere. He was often known for his sharp, crude humor that brought laughter to those around him. His sense of humor was a defining trait, making him not only a beloved family member but also a cherished friend to many. He was the kind of person who always told it like it was, and people loved him for his authenticity and honesty. He was the one you wanted on your side in tough times and the happy times.

In junior high, he fell in love with aerospace and rockets. He attended Tech High for aviation, graduating in 1980. After graduation, he completed basic training in San Diego for the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1980. He then attended DMACC.

Tom worked various jobs over the years as a dock-worker and truck driver; he ended up at his dream job working for the city of Des Moines. He made a lasting impact until his retirement in December 2023. His took great pride in his roles.

In addition to his professional life, Tom was a dedicated disc golfer, enjoying the sport’s challenges and camaraderie. He was a proud Mason, belonging to Home Lodge #370. He enjoyed going on trips with his family, often around the state to find the best burger, from the Des Moines Register yearly rankings. He also traveled the country to visit his friends and local disc golf courses. He was at one time a semi-pro disc golfer, playing in tournaments for the thrill. His remarkable sense of direction was always reliable, and his ability to recall song lyrics or movie quotes added joy to gatherings with family and friends. He was a music lover through and through. Tom was a family man and had a wide network of friends; he never met a stranger.

Tom will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, laughter, and straight talk will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.

Tom was a devoted son, taking his mother to visit her best friend in Florida and keeping her company, even though they could drive each other crazy at times. He was a devoted husband to Lisa of 40 years, to whom they had three children: Melinda (Josh) Allison, Thomas (Ramolaa) Shah-Lansing, and Amanda Lansing. He had two grandchildren, Eva Allison and Niam Shah-Lansing, who he loved dearly, and host of cousins. We will carry his memory with us always.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, Paul Lansing; brother, James Lansing; and his grandparents.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.

The disc golf community, music community, East side, family, and friends miss him dearly. Tom would consider flowers a waste of money, so his family requests respecting his wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his family for the future purchase of a memorial plaque in honor of his memory at a yet-to-be determined location in Des Moines. Rest in peace, Tom. You will always be with us.
