Susan "Susie" Jane Clouser

Susan "Susie" Jane Clouser passed peacefully on June 7, 2026, in West Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 79.

Susie was born on January 27, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Trena (Elliott) Cuthbertson and John Cuthbertson. She grew up in Perry and graduated with the Perry High School Class of 1965. She then attended Iowa State University, where she was an active member of the Chi Omega sorority and earned a degree in Business in 1969.

While at Iowa State, Susie met the love of her life, Michael Clouser. They were married on March 22, 1969, and shared more than 51 years of marriage. Early in their marriage, they lived in Chicago and later Benicia, California, following Mike's career in sales. During their time in California, they welcomed two sons, Mark and Scott.

In late 1977, an opportunity arose for Susie and Mike to go into business for themselves. They moved their family to Coon Rapids, Iowa, and purchased what became Coon Rapids Farm & Home. Susie managed the housewares, clothing, and toy departments, which became well known throughout West Central Iowa. She also oversaw the bookkeeping operations and played an integral role in the success of the family business.

Beyond her business accomplishments, Susie was deeply committed to her community. She generously volunteered her time as a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Community Betterment Group. As the daughter of an educator, she held a lifelong passion for education and learning. In 1984, that passion led her to join the DMACC Area Board of Directors, where she served for ten years, including terms as Vice President (1986–1987) and President (1988–1991). During her tenure, she played a significant role in the development and launch of the DMACC Carroll Campus.

In 1994, Susie and Mike moved to the Des Moines metropolitan area. She remained active professionally, working in marketing, investment planning support, and retail sales before retiring in 2011.

Susie found joy in traveling, playing cards, spending time at the lake, and maintaining lifelong friendships. She loved entertaining guests, bringing people together, and sharing meaningful conversations. Her warmth, generosity, and welcoming spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

Susie is survived by her sons, Mark (Angela) Clouser of Waukee and Scott (Amanda) Clouser of Adel; and by her beloved grandchildren, Grace, Emily, Colin, and Makenzie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; her parents; and her brother, Jim.

At Susie's request, no services will be held. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to support an educational cause in their local community.
