Ruth Tish

Ruth Esther Tish, age 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Ruth was born October 1, 1931, in Urbandale, Iowa to Edward J. and Virginia Esther (Tallen) Witmer. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 1949.

Throughout her life she enjoyed a multitude of hobbies and interests from square dancing, to a good garage sale, and the plants! She had such a green thumb that the house was often overflowing with plants - sometimes in the 100s! Ruth was always exploring a new joy. She was most proud of her Christmas time decorating and wow, did she “Deck the Halls” at Christmas! She also loved animals as they brought her so much unreserved love it was hard to tell who got more joy - Ruth or the pets.

More than anything she treasured her family and was a proud matriarch to a large extended family. Nothing made Ruth happier than a gathering of the family with as much food, laughter, and commotion as possible. Her family is heartbroken at her loss and her beaming smile, and warm tender hugs will be immeasurably missed and a treasured memory.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gerald Lee Tish; sister, Ellen Stonehocker; her children, Jimmy Goodwin, Rick Goodwin, Mark Goodwin, and Dawn Goodwin; stepsons, Eric Tish and Joe Tish; as well as 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Virginia; her brothers, Jimmy, Richard, and Eddie Witmer; and her son, Wayne Goodwin.

According to Ruth’s wishes, cremation will occur, and services will be held at a later date.
