Richard "Dick" W. Hudnall
August 03, 1943 — January 04, 2024
***DUE TO THE WEATHER, MR. HUDNALL'S SERVICE IS POSTPONED UNTIL WEDNESDAY***
Richard “Dick” W. Hudnall succumbed to a heart attack at his home on January 4, 2024 after struggling for years with dementia.
Dick was born August 3, 1943 to Jessie Burton Hudnall and Helen Louise (Heefner) Hudnall.
After a brief time as a student at Drake University he began his career in the insurance industry. He began as an agent for John Hancock and spent the rest of his career as an independent insurance agent; first with William Palmer Insurance Agency, most recently with The Insurance Store while maintaining his own agency Richard W. Hudnall Insurance.
He was involved in several Masonic organizations and he received his 33rd degree. He is a past master of Acanthus Masonic Lodge and a member of Scottish Rite, York Rite, and Za Ga Zig Shrine. He was often found in the kitchen planning, preparing, and serving hundreds of meals as the leader and a member of the kitchen crew for all of the masonic organizations. He also shared his cooking experiences and prepared several meals with other members of the Za Ga Zig Shrine as a founding member of the Gourmet club.
His children graduated from East Des Moines High School (EHS) and he was past president of the band boosters and PTA. He managed the concession stands for football games at Williams Stadium and basketball games at the High School for several years even after all his children graduated from EHS.
As a lifelong salesman he enjoyed being a concessionaire at the Iowa State Fair selling T-shirts outside the Varied Industries building greeting many repeat customers and friends with a smile and a wink.
He was involved in local politics as he was the precinct leader and delegate for Polk County for several decades.
Grandchildren came later on and he enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, sing, dance and grow.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings James, Charles, and Barbara (Kieksee); and his grandson Allan Curray.
He is survived by his loving wife Nancy; daughter Karene (Tom) Curray, son Blaine (Connie), son Aaron; grandchildren Calleigh, Brenna, Kailey, Rose, Sophie, Rylie, and Levi.
Dick and Nancy were married in 1964 and he will be missed by his wife of 59 years, his family, and all the lives he has touched over 80 years.

Sorry to hear about this. I have plenty of positive memories of Dick from my childhood. Always very supportive of his family and anything that was East High. I appreciated all his efforts and send my thoughts out to all his family.

Stephen and Kim sorry to hear of Dick's passing. Our love goes out to Nancy, Blaine & Aaron. We always thought fondly of Dick and enjoyed working with him in the kitchen. He always made challenging recipes (from scratch) which we appreciate!

Im so sorry to hear of Dicks passing. I enjoyed getting to know him while working at the Tee Factory back in the day. Every year at the fair you could count on seeing him and Nancy next to their stand. Thoughts and prayers with Nancy, Aaron, Blaine and the rest of the family.

I always enjoyed my visits with Dick at the Scottish Rite and at the Shrine. He was a great guy. He cooked so many delicious meals for his brother Masons. I also enjoyed seeing Dick at the Iowa State Fair. I made it a point just to stop by his stand and say hello. God bless you my friend and brother... God speed. Until we meet again, rest well.

Condolences to Nancy and the rest of the family. I met Dick through our Masonic Lodge in Beaverdale, and later through the Shriners, Scottish Rite & York Rite. Dick gave of his time generously to help others through those organizations and I'm sure a few civic ones I'm not aware of. I gratefully received many hours of council and help from Dick during my years "in the chairs" at Lodge and our local Shriner organization. I know there are many more people who can say they received help, support and advice from Dick.

I saw Dick many times during his work at both a campus Lodge in Beaverdale, and at the Scottish Rite Consistory. I always made it a point to stop by his T-shirt stand at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. I had a great conversation with Dick when he had finished cooking a big meal at the Scottish Rite during a time when his son, Blaine, was deployed. Of course, he was very, very proud of his son, serving as an officer in the U.S. Army & Iowa Army National Guard. When I stopped by the shirt stand last Summer I learned that Dick had not been doing very well. Very sorry to learn of his passing. What a great legacy of service and advocacy, he leaves for all who knew him to follow.
