John Van Horn
May 06, 1954 — May 15, 2024
John Allen Van Horn, 70, passed away on May 15th, 2024. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 6th, 1954, to James and Violet (Lehman) Van Horn.
John worked as a Dental Technician for over 30 years in Des Moines and was thoroughly enjoying his retirement. He loved to listen to his records with Cousin Bill, sit on the front porch, tell dirty jokes, not fall asleep in his chair, and try to figure out how to work his iPad. However, his favorite activity was spending time with his two best friends and designated feline drinking buddies, Guthrie and Oliver. He inherited his mother’s inappropriate sense of humor, which he then passed on to his daughter, Dana. They spent many hours enjoying each other’s company, laughing and making people uncomfortable.
John was a wonderful father, grandfather, husband and son. His grandchildren were the apples of his eye and the true highlights of his life. He was always willing to help a friend in need and was known to provide random acts of service and kindness to his loved ones. He was loved very much by his family and will be missed more than words can express.
He is survived by his children, Billy Van Horn of Omaha, Dana (Chris) Kelly of Little Chute, Wisconsin, Andrew Curry of Des Moines; 4 grandchildren, Autumn, Willow, Beau and Wyatt; his cats, Guthrie and Oliver; 2 beloved mothers-in-law; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by second wife, Paula (Karnes); first wife, Juanita (Williams) Van Hornand; and his parents.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date for close family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of John Van Horn.
