Harold Fees
June 15, 1938 — March 03, 2026
Harold R Fees, age 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones in his final moments. Harold was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Clayton and Ellen Fees on June 15th, 1938.
Harold attended Des Moines Tech High School through his Junior year. In true Harold fashion, he decided on a whim during gym class to join the United States Air Force at the age of 17, completing his education sometime after. Harold proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1956-1960. Following his time in the service, he worked many jobs, most recently as a painter for Fees Painting, alongside his boys.
Harold married his best friend and the love of his life, Joanne, on December 23, 1956, beginning a beautiful journey filled with love, laughter, shenanigans and countless shared memories. Harold and Joanne raised four children together, JR, Mark, Kristie and Billy. Although, some may say Joanne raised a total of five. Harold was a devoted husband and father. He truly was a big kid at heart who loved his family deeply and ensured their lives were always full of adventure, togetherness, and a never-ending supply of fun.
Harold never met a stranger. He loved sharing jokes, telling wild stories, talking about his time in the Air Force and of his travels; as well as reminiscing on the special (and sometimes mischievous) times he shared with his brother-in-law, Bud.
Harold had an extraordinary gift- a soft heart full of kindness, a creative imagination, an ornery streak and a special love for his grandchildren (including greats and great greats) Known to them as Pa, his love and support of them will forever be unmatched and never, ever forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Joanne; his children JR Fees of Des Moines; Mark (Lori) Fees of Carlisle; Kristie (Rick) Van Zandt of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Harold now rests peacefully with his son Billy; his parents Clayton and Ellen, mother-in-law Maxine, along with a host of many other beloved late family members.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Central VA Hospice Care who took such compassionate care of Harold during his final days. Your kindness and unwavering support never went unnoticed. Thank you so much.
Pa, you were such a powerful light in our world and will never be forgotten. Until we meet again, “have a good one.”
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Harold.
