Service Details

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Elizabeth DeFino, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, who departed this world on October 23, 2023. Her remarkable faith, devotion, and unwavering love left an indelible mark on the lives of all who had the privilege to know her.

Elizabeth, known to most as Betty, was born to her ling parents, Louis and Rose Lorenzano, and older brother, Sam, on January 28, 1932. Her devotion to St. Anthony Parish in Des Moines was a testament to her sincere practice of the Catholic faith. As a lifelong parishioner of St. Anthony’s Parish, Betty was cherished by the community for her grace in exemplifying the teachings of love and compassion.

Elizabeth shared a happy marriage of 67 years with her soulmate, Armond, before his death in 2018. She continued to be a source of strength and support for her family, never losing sight of the values they held dear. She was a dedicated, loving mother to her four children: Karen (John) Ausen, Nick (Vickie), Armond(Holly), and Lou(Julie). Some of her favorite times were shared with family vacations in Okoboji. She devoted herself to her family and filled their home with warmth, love, and delicious Italian food.

As the family’s matriarch, Elizabeth helped shape the lives of younger generations. “Nana” welcomed eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren into her heart and was beloved for her tender guidance and endless affection. Elizabeth will also be remembered by the many family and friends she loved and whose lives she touched.

Elizabeth approached all aspects of life with passion and enthusiasm. From her relationship with God to her devotion to her friends, her family, and their business (Des Moines Ornamental Iron), Betty was unfaltering. She leaves an enduring legacy of hard work and benevolence. Our hearts are warmed by all who join us in remembering her smile, laughter, and words of wisdom.

A memorial service to commemorate Elizabeth DeFino’s life will be held at St. Anthony Church on Wednesday, November 1st, where family and friends will gather to pay their respects and celebrate the life of the incredible woman loved by so many. The wake service will be held at 10 am and the funeral will begin at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Anthony Parish.
