Earl McGrew

Earl “Butch” Thomas McGrew, 83, passed away December 19, 2023 at Taylor Hospice House.

He was born December 5, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa to his parents, Raymond and Norma McGrew. His father was a Des Moines Firefighter and his mother a homemaker. Butch attended East High School and graduated from North High School. He served in the Navy for 3 years and the Army for 4 years. He was a Des Moines Firefighter for 36 years and had many stories to tell. Following his time as a Firefighter, he became a bus driver for the Johnston Community School District for 16 years. The kids called him, “Mr.B”. He loved his school bus days and spending time with the kids, where he equally loved them in return.

Butch is survived by his wife, Debra McGrew; sons, Devin and Trenton McGrew; daughter, Arlene Wegner; sisters, Sherry Thorn, Deanne Thorn, and Stephanie McGrew; and 7 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kathleen Mallory; and daughter, Brandi Beckman.

Service will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive Adel, Iowa later in the spring.
