Dave Bernholtz
August 03, 1967 — April 10, 2025
David "Dave" Bernholtz, 57, passed away on April 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family—exactly how he would have wanted it: with the people he loved most, teasing each other, and reminiscing about all the memories.
Born on August 3, 1967, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Merle and Loretta Bernholtz, Dave grew up with a strong sense of family, a fondness for the outdoors, and the kind of laugh that made you chuckle, too—especially when it ended in a snort or a raspy cough and smile from ear to ear.
Dave loved fishing, hunting, and spending time at the lake—anything that got him outside and gave him a reason to crack open a cold one. He was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Kansas City Chiefs, and NASCAR, though he never let a bad game ruin a good snack. He had a complicated relationship with power tools (they didn’t always cooperate), but he still found joy in fixing things, even if those “projects” came with a creative twist, a story or two and possibly a trip to the ER.
Through countless health challenges, Dave never lost his fight, his sense of humor, or let it define him. He was stubborn in the best kind of way, with a resilience that inspired everyone around him. He could light up a room with his caring eyes, huge grin, or offer a warm bear hug just when you needed it. He gave generously, loved fiercely, and always made time for his family.
He is survived by the love of his life, Becky Bernholtz, his wife of 30 years; and his children, Julia (Adam) Madsen; Carly (Joey Penman) Bernholtz; Hayley (Christian) Boles, and Lucas Bernholtz. Dave was a proud grandpa to grandchildren, Teacy Madsen, Colin Madsen, Charles Madsen, Adrian Madsen, Michelle Madsen, Aylee Penman, and Derrick Penman —each of whom characterized a bit of his mischievous charm.
He also leaves behind his siblings Kenny (Carmen) Bernholtz, Ron (Debb) Bernholtz, Karen (Ron) Frazee, John (Mickey) Bernholtz, Chad (Cathy) Bernholtz; in-laws, Patty and Woody Collins, Chip (Carol) Collins and Rachel (Kenny) Wilson; and a big extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends who became family over the years.
Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Loretta Bernholtz; and brother, Denny Bernholtz.
Family will greet friends Wednesday, April 23, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Memorial service will take place the following day Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home with committal to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, 524 NW 54th Avenue in Des Moines.
