Service Details

Alice Agnes Funk, 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, leaving behind a family who loved her deeply and will miss her more than words can express.

To know Alice was to know that she rarely sugarcoated her opinions. She was stubborn, strong-willed, and never afraid to tell you exactly what she thought—whether you asked or not. But beneath that tough exterior was a woman whose love for her family ran deeper than anything else in her life.

She was fiercely loyal and protective of those she loved. Her family always knew that if they needed someone in their corner, she would be there—ready to defend them, support them, and remind them that they mattered. While her affection was not always expressed through soft words or warm hugs, it was evident in her actions, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Alice enjoyed bird and squirrel watching, and feeding all the animals in her yard. She treasured family gatherings, and created countless stories that will be shared for years to come. She had a sharp wit, a memorable personality, and a presence that could never be ignored.

She is survived by her children, Hazel Shepherd of Des Moines, IA, Tammy McCall of Indianola, IA, Ken (Carrie) Yaw of Des Moines, IA, Mary Adams of Indianola, IA, Laura Hamlin of Carlisle, IA, Travis (Jessica) of Fort Dodge, IA, 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, her brother James Jewell, and numerous friends and family. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Melvin Funk, 2 brothers, and her parents.

Her family will remember her strength, her determination, her honesty, and most of all, the fierce love she carried for them throughout her life.

A funeral service will be held on June 29, 2026. Interment will be privately at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life luncheon to follow at 1:00 pm at 910 Main St, Van Meter.

In the end, Alice leaves behind a family that is stronger because of her, a lifetime of memories, and a legacy of love that endured through every rough edge.
