Wanda (Baker) Sears was born March 16, 1935 in Kansas and passed away at her home June 14, 2011.

Wanda was a Registered Nurse and had traveled throughout the U.S. serving as a consultant for various hospitals.

Wanda was a very active member of Walnut Creek Community Church. She volunteered with Vacation Bible School and served as administrator of Awanas, where the children fondly referred to her as “Grandma Sears.” She was active in several social groups, including the Drop In Group and STARS.

She will be remembered as a faithful volunteer by the Republican Party. She was very active with the Polk County Republican Central Committee and the Iowa Christian Alliance. She enjoyed working at the Republican caucuses on the County, District and State levels and at the Republican booth at the Iowa State Fair.

Wanda loved crafting of any kind. She enjoyed knitting, gardening and photography. She was a beautiful painter and had a passion for quilting. Wanda was in various quilting clubs including the Des Moines Quilting Guild and PIN Pals. Graduations, weddings, new babies and other special occasions were celebrated with a handmade quilt from Wanda. Many of her quilts were sent overseas to help those in need.

She was also a member of the NRA and Iowa Sportsman Federation. Wanda was a huge NFL and NASCAR fan. In years past, she loved spending her spare time riding her motorcycle.

Wanda is survived by her children, Ula Ann, Muriel Louise, Wanda May and Oad “Butch” Lestle; her grandchildren; siblings; and her church family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wavy and Rowena Baker; and one sibling.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 20, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Walnut Creek Church, 900 64th Street. Burial will follow at Oralabor Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church in loving memory of Wanda.
