Donald Bruhn, 87, died April 3, 2011, at the Fountain West Care Center.

Donald was born March 11, 1924, in Clinton, Iowa, to Henry and Mary (McEleney) Bruhn. When he was eight years old, Donald fell from a bicycle. The injury developed into osteomylitis and resulted in physical challenges throughout his life.

He graduated from Clinton High School in 1946, attended the University if Iowa and the American Institute of Commerce. Don studied bookkeeping and accounting. He worked in this field for most of his career. Don finished his career working fifteen years for the State of Iowa, Office of Disaster Services, where he served as an administrative assistant and in 1979 he was appointed acting Director by Governor Ray.

Don married Jean Bowman on June 15, 1957. They spent over forty-seven happy years together, until her death July 12, 2004. He was a past Master of Emulation Lodge 255, a member of the Scottish Rite Free Masonry in Clinton and a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Temple in Des Moines. He was also active in the Statesmen Toasters and served as their President in 1981.

After retirement Don enjoyed playing the electric organ and entertaining friends at the Lodge of Ashworth , West Des Moines where Don and Jean resided for approximately 18 years. Donald’s formula for life; Music for the mind and exercise for the body!

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; three brothers; one sister.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 8, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Entombment to follow at Resthaven Mausoleum. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
