Landis Lowell Butcher, 82, passed away at Mercy Hospital on Thursday, August 5, 2010, on his son Lindsey’s 54th birthday and one day short of being married 55 years to his wife, Norma Oshel Butcher. He was born June 6, 1928 in Adair County, Iowa.
Landis served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, being stationed in Germany. During that time he and his Army friends bought a car and traveled throughout Europe. He was a member out of Legion Post 0060 and worked at Solar Aircraft Company retiring from John Deer in 1975 with ongoing heart problems.
He is survived by his wife, Norma, son Lindsey (Karen) and grandson, Jeremy; sisters, LaVonne Alexander and Lilia (Garry) Smith
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Nellie Norman Butcher, sister Lois Allen and brother, Lavelle.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 9th, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Per keeping with his kindness to others, Landis donated his body to Des Moines University.

I first met Landis when renting a house from him in the ealy 80's for me, my wife, and young daughter.He was the best to rent from and kept the property in excellent shape,and would have any problems fixed asap.But even more important than that,he had a genuine concern for our family.Landis knew my Dad and told me he had worked with him building the Creston Municipal swimming pool,something I didn't know my Dad had done. Our second daughter was born while we lived at the house, and was the last house we lived in before moving to Missouri.
Sincere sympathy to Lindsay, Norma and all of Landis' family. He was cut from the lind of cloth that is sadly becoming a rarity to find, and I know he will be deeply missed.

I met Landis last summer while I was running down Park Avenue training for the DSM Marathon. He was out working on some trees in his yard. I was amazed that a man of his age was out doing such physical labor. It gave me inspiration to "keep running!". We talked for a few minutes and I could tell that he was a genuine and caring person. I thought about him everytime I would run by his house. My uncle had worked on that house when it was built and I was curious to meet the person that lived there. Just goes to show how a simple conversation can impact people more then you realize. It was an honor to meet him, even if it was only brief. My sincerest prayers are with his family. I know that he must have many jewels in his crown.
