Melvin Lacher, 82, died Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born February 18, 1927 in Des Moines to Ruth (Nelson) and Jesse Lacher.
He retired in 1985 from John Deere after 37 years of dedicated work. Melvin was a member of UAW Local 450. He loved spending time with his family and attending family picnics.
He is survived by his son, Michael D. (Janice); his daughter, Vicki D. (Mark) Short; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; and a son, Terry.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. A visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm, Friday, February 12, 2010 at the funeral home.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your father was a distance cousin of my mothers, who I lost in 2002.Her grandmother was Maude Latcher.
My mother grew up best of friends with your mother Patty, down somewhere on North 12th st.I know your father conversed with my folks alot at Hy-Vee during the coffee klach days. I had the oppertunity to talk to your dad a few years ago when I called him pumping him for information on the family tree . He was very kind to me and gave all of the information that he could.

It's been many years since I sat around Pat and Mel's table, but I have many wonderful memories of being in their home. Please know my thoughts are with you, Vicki and Mike, in this sad time. They were both such warm, caring and loving people. I felt very fortunate to know them.

VICKI, IM SO VERY SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR DAD. YOUR PARENT S WERE A BIG PART OF MY JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL DAYS. I HAVE MANY FOND MEMORIES STAYING AT YOUR HOUSE AND CONVERSATIONS WITH BOTH YOUR MOM AND DAD. A true, kind friend has passed to be with the love of his life.
Uncle Mel was an icon to me; he treated me as though I were special long before I did so myself. Over the years I learned quite a bit from him and whenever in his presence I felt like I'd returned home. I am so fortunate to have known him.
I am especially sad for you, Vicki, as I know the loving bond between you and your Dad was very strong. For me, the pain is diminished knowing he is reunited with Aunt Pat.
