Eric W. Hines
February 04, 2010
Eric Hines, 39, died Feb. 4, 2010, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa, with his family by his side. Eric was born on July 2, 1970, in Cedar Falls to Kent and Kay (Larsen) Hines, moving to Johnston in 1982. He graduated from Johnston H.S. in 1988. He attended ICCC and DMACC, and graduated from Iowa State University in 1993.
Eric married Christine Leonard in 1993, and their son Nick was born in 1997.
On Jan. 2, 1998, while helping the Clear Lake H.S. wrestling team, Eric had a cardiac arrest and suffered an anoxic brain injury. He has lived at On With Life in Glenwood since 2001.
Prior to his injury, Eric worked for DEX yellow pages while living in Clear Lake. He loved his family and friends, and everything life had to offer. He was an avid golfer, played rugby, boated and water skied. He loved gambling trips to Las Vegas and local casinos. He hunted, fished, and followed sports, especially wrestling and football. He was proud to be a Cyclone, and tail gating was a favorite activity. He also loved Johnston HS.
Eric was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dr. Aubrey and Marynelle Larsen, Jerry Hines and Frances Hines, and cousins Al Larsen and Abby Mahoney.
Eric is survived by his parents of Johnston, son Nick (Omaha), sister Lana (Trey) Strong and nieces and nephew, Jerra, Lauren and Logan Strong (Las Vegas, NV), Nick’s mother Christine Knudson (Omaha), grandmother Ruth Hines (Nevada), and beloved cousins, aunts, uncles, and wonderful friends.
Eric received wonderful care at On With Life and Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, and we are so grateful to the nurses, doctors, therapists and staff who have lovingly cared for Eric. We also appreciate the support of friends and family during the last 12 years.
The Mass of Celebration will be Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 10 a.m. from St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale. The visitation will be Monday from 5:30 until 8:00 pm at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines.
Memorials are being established to Johnston H.S. and On With Life in Eric’s name.

We were so sorry to hear of Eric's death. So many years have passed and it seems like only a short while ago that he and Mike were racing bikes around the block with Brian right on their heels. We have many fun memories of their time together. Wish the weather would have been more co-operative and we were there with you. You'll all remain in our thoughts. Pat & Earl

I will never forget the great times Eric and I had growing up in Cherry Wood, We had the best childhood a kid could ask for. It was nice to reconnect with Eric after college and I wish It could have continued for many more years, I wanted to be there today, but the snow storm has me stuck. Wish all the best for the hines family, And I know Eric's son will grow up big and strong like his dad, he has good genes to work with. From all the Meeter family we feel your loss in our hearts.

Kent, Kay and Family,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Although my time with Eric was short, it had a big impact on my life amd my memories. The big gentle giant with the smile that wouldn't quit, his passion for life, golf, wrestling and the Cyclones. He lived every day to the fullest and his memories will live on with all that had an opportunity to know and love him. God bless,

Most likely because of the weather, I will not be able to attend.
I did want all of you to know what a great family support system you have been over the last 12 yrs for Eric. He couldn't have asked for a better family.
I have been praying for all of you. I hope you know that you can always count on me. You are "good people" in my book.
Take care

Shakespeare wrote in his play Henry V, Act 4, Scene 3:
"From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother"
Throughout history this quote has been adopted by Rugby teams around the world to reflect the deep brotherhood of our sport. Eric was a member of River City Rugby of Mason City in the mid 1990's. He was a good friend to many, a tenacious competitor, and a brother to all who stepped on the playing field to "do battle" with him as a team mate.
On behalf of his team mates, friends, and brothers of River City Rugby, our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

I have thought often of you since I heard the news on Friday about Eric's passing. I have taken the day off to come to the funeral Tuesday morning, but
I fear the weather will interfere. Even tonight the weather for the visitation does not sound hopeful. I'm so sorry the weather is adding to your sorrow. I keep hoping the weather will blow away from us like it did on Friday.
You are in my prayers. If the weather permits, I will be there Tuesday.
