Sheridan William “Dan” Foy, 59, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, January 21, 2010 after complications from a stroke.
A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 3600 75th Street, in Urbandale on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation, also at the church, on Friday, January 29 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Dan was born in Stamford, CT to William B. and Dorothy Winters Foy. He graduated from Mullen H.S. in Denver, CO and Drake University. He started his career in Des Moines with Allied Insurance Company, he then worked for Hawkeye-Security Insurance Company and most recently at EMC Insurance Company as an Underwriting Consultant. Dan met Barbara Saltzman while both were working at Hawkeye-Security Insurance Company. They were married October 25, 1980 and son, Evan was born in November 1983. He enjoyed sports but really loved baseball. Other interests were, reading, music, airshows, Drake Basketball, building model airplanes, and vacationing in warm climates. He also volunteered for the Iowa Commission for the Blind by recording books on tape.
Dan is survived by his wife Barb; son Evan; brother, Michael (Paula); sister, Catherine (Gary) Brushaber; brother, Brian (Cathy); mother-in-law, Nina Saltzman; brother-in-law, Ron (Karen) Saltzman; nieces and nephews, Jennifer and Will Foy, Michelle and Samantha Brushaber, Meghan Foy, Steven and Amy Saltzman. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Commission for the Blind, Mercy Hospice, or to the family for a memorial of their choosing, in lieu of flowers.

Dan was a volunteer narrator for the Iowa Library for the Blind for many years, transcribing books and other print materials into accessible audio recordings for blind and physically handicapped patrons. It is just one example of his care for others. We are grateful for all that he contributed to our mission of access for all and we appreciate the many hours of his time he so generously devoted to our cause. He will be missed. On behalf of everyone in the audio recording program and the library, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Dan's family and friends.

I worked with Dan at Hawkeye Security. Dan was always a happy and very pleasant man. We shared many a laugh about our industry and the every day tasks. I wanted you to know that he was very well thought of.

Dan was a very gentle man. It was obvious to those that knew him that he cared about everyone he met. He was very non-judgmental, and was able to control any temper he had when others would not be able to do so. He was quite a Hawkeye fan for sure! He will be greatly missed by those fortunate enough to know him. My thoughts and prayers go to Barb and the entire family.
