June 23, 2023
Janice Kay Lage, 81, passed away June 23, 2023 after suffering a stroke. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Martinsburg, Iowa.
Jan was born November 6, 1941 in Martinsburg, Iowa to Adah (Fuller) and Neil Richardson. She graduated from Hedrick High School in Hedrick, Iowa. Following graduation, Janice moved to Fairfield, IA and worked for Parsons College. She later moved to Des Moines where she met her future husband Richard Lage at the Des Moines Community Playhouse. The couple married on July 12, 1969 and moved to Burbank, CA for the warmth and beauty. They returned to Des Moines in 1971 to be closer to family and Jan began working for United Airlines as an Administrative Assistant until her retirement in 2003.
Jan had a love for the arts. She was a gifted poet, and a talented sketch artist. She took great delight in music and dancing and also loved swimming and horseback riding. Jan treasured her travels and with her employment at United was able to travel frequently. Her highlight trips included Denver, to visit her dear sister, Viet Nam, Europe, Hawaii, Ireland, Spain, and Africa to name a few. As a life-long devoted Christian, she loved reading the Bible and often would highlight verses that held special meaning to her that she wanted read at her funeral service. In her later years, Jan cherished the time spent with her sister, Janie and her beloved cat, Miles.
Jan is survived by her sister, Janie Wonderlich; her step-children, Erich (Tami) Lage and Leslie (Todd) Lage; and her cat, Miles. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Joan Richardson; her husband, Richard Lage; brothers-in-law, Lt. Michael K. Wonderlich and Charles Elder; step-sons, Brian and Todd Lage; and beloved cat, Beau.

It is so hard to say goodbye, Jan. You were a great friend to me and bridesmaid in my wedding. I was thrilled to see you once again since you moved back to the Midwest with Jane and the fur babies. I will think of you often as the times we shared were special and you were there for me and Janie both. Big hugs dear friend. Til we meet again.

How sad I am to know that sweet kind, caring Jan has passed. She was always smiling and laughing. Always looked forward to seeing her and Rick at my Christmas parties . I enjoyed being in shows with her and Rick. Jan was a great dancer and showed her skills in the tap class I taught at the Des Moines Playhouse. She was so talented!
But it was her sweet smile and kindness I will always remember.
