Rosemary Edna Hazen
April 20, 2023
Rosemary “Rosie” Hazen died April 20 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. She was 85.
Born January 13, 1938 to Ralph and Julia McKinley, Rose was a proud graduate (1956) of East High School. She spent more than 20 years working in the accounting department at Iowa Power (later MidAmerican Energy), where she met her future husband, Merle Hazen. They were married June 25, 1970.
Merle died in 1995 and some years later Rosie shared a special relationship with Tom O’Brien. Tom died in 2014. Also preceding Rosie in death were her brother, Ralph Jr. and her parents.
Rosie leaves behind many close friends and a legacy of hard work. As the playwright Neil Simon wrote: “There are men and women who make the world a better place just by being the kind of people they are.” That was Rosie.
A mass to celebrate her life will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 28, 2023 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 3300 Easton Blvd, Des Moines. Burial will follow at Des Moines Masonic Cemetery.

I am truly sorry for your loss! My thoughts and prayers are with Rosies family.
I moved in 2 doors East of Merle and Rosie back in 1976. Everyone was so nice and inviting. Rosie watched my son grow up and then my Grandson who is now 16. As the years passed I would see her in the yard or pass by in the car and wave. She was such a wonderful person. I would always offer help if she needed anything. Myself, my husband, son or grandson was there to help. She always would say ok Ill let you know. Sweet lady!
I still reside at my address and now I guess Ill take over Rosies position as the longest resident on this block. ❤
RIP! Well miss you!

How I'd hoped to get to know you a little better, Rosemary. But I thank God for the time I did have with you. You were so sweet and encouraging to me & my family as we visited my mother in the care center across the hallway from you. I remember when you arrived and had to quarantine, just like she did, due to COVID-19 regulations. I'm so glad they left the door open so I could wave, share smiles and talk to you through the plastic-covered doorway. How happy I was when that plastic door was removed and you allowed me to enter your space and visit with you and pray for you. I'm thankful you were blessed & not stressed by my children/grandchildren & mom's church family that came & went rather loudly at times (ha)...how they sang loud enough that you could hear; how YOU encouraged me when you could tell I was tired and worn down; the sincere compassion in your eyes & voice when my mother passed away. So much I would've liked to learn about you and share with you....like seeing you worked at Iowa Power. I did too one summer when I was in high school and my husband's uncle worked/retired from there. I wonder if you knew him. East HS - my mother-in-law graduated from there...wonder if you knew any of her family. And I really would've loved to have made your day with some of our Shivers Farms pork bacon that we talked about prior to your scan. We had sickness circulating in our family & I dare not take a chance of spreading it to anyone there. Sorry. Rest in peace my newest friend. I feel blessed to have had the short time with you here on earth. I look forward to getting reacquainted when God calls me Home.
