Irene M. Gogerty was born in Chapin, Iowa in 1913. She graduated from Radcliff High School and took Normal Training to become a teacher in a one room school. She married Henry Gogerty and gave birth to seven children. They moved to Des Moines and raised their family. She had several occupations then retired from the Commission of the Blind. Irene was an avid reader from childhood and encouraged everyone to read a good book. She also was an author of two books and always had another story or poem in her head. Irene wrote columns for her home town paper of which she had quite a following.
Irene had a quick wit and enjoyed a good communication with all of her children and was the best counselor. She was the Kitchen Table Psychologist. She is survived by all of her seven children, Shirley, Mary, Jim, John, Doris, Ed and Phyllis and their spouses, Lou Witthoft, Betty Gogerty, Jim Bruder and Joann Gogerty; 21 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Doris Blumenauer of Hastings, MN and Margaret Zimmerman of Stillwater, MN and her beloved nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Einar and Christina Maland; her sister, Helen; brothers, Norman and Eugene; and her husband, Henry Gogerty.
Irene passed away at Taylor House on Sunday morning, February 11, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a Vigil service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
