Mr. Sandin was my favorite teacher. I had a Tourettes tic that made me a nuisance in class. While other teachers would scold me and put me on the spot and makes my symptoms worse, he realized that was only holding me back. He was the first teacher to notice that when I would doodle on my assignments, my tic would stop and Id no longer be the same disruptive kid. After that he encouraged me to draw on them, and he genuinely loved them, too. We had a mutual love for science fiction, no wonder he loved my alien doodles. Few teachers have ever been as supportive or as patient since, and you know you did right as a teacher if your students are still talking about you years later. It makes me very sad to hear that he is gone now, I wish I could have seen him one more time to tell him how much that meant to me.

My older brother relayed its a biblical principal that if you dont talk about others behind their back, likewise you wont be talked about negatively by others. He expressed this and used his Hoover classmate and church friend as the evidence for this - Craig.
Though gentle and selfless, he was quite a wrestler and strong as an ox and could have dismantled anyone that got in his way-but Craig chose to restrain himself and quietly leave judgement to God.
You were safe in Craigs presence and able to be yourself as he would unassumingly think the best of you with his ever present smile and loving disposition. Craig loved Jesus modeling his life on Him and I look forward to reuniting and hearing him tell what its like while he half laughs tickled at what he has to express.

My condolences to the family on your loss. While it's been many years since I last saw Craig at Y-Camp, I remember well his joyful spirit. He would tell stories all the while laughing as he told them. The slide show on the site so beautifully captures his wonderful smile and his playful spirit.

Craig was joy incarnate. I remember a day when he challenged the Ycamp counselors to bring him something unbreakable. We gave up after he demolished a granite ball (gleefully giggling the whole time).

A great guy that helped form me to be a better person. We worked at Y-camp together for many years. Our wrestling matches were epic and we worked hard to keep Y-camp the special place it is. Joyrene - I miss the days of working in the kitchen and busting our butts while having fun!

I am deeply saddened by this news. Craig was a genuine human being who I had the pleasure of working alongside at DSM YMCA Camp. He taught me a lot of life lessons and was a gentle giant. We shared many laughs together and will always hold a special place in my heart. A stout hearted man. RIP until we meet again my friend.

Mr. Sandin was always one to encourage his students to be proud in the things that brings them joy, even if others might not understand. He went out of his way to listen to the kids who weren't always heard and made them feel acknowledged and included. In one of the most strange and confusing times of anyone's life, he taught me that the best thing I could be is genuine and compassionate, not just to others but to myself as well. I'm forever grateful that I had him as a teacher, and I hope the stars welcome him with the reverence and warmth he deserves.

I played on the 1990 HR Middle School football team--his first head coaching gig at the school. Liked him a lot and he was great at getting guys motivated to get out on the field. He genuinely seemed to care about his guys.
Chatted with him a bit after my Dad's funeral back in 2013. I said "hey coach" when he came over to talk to me. That's what he will always be to me, Coach Sandin. RIP Coach.

Mr. Sandin was the greatest teacher I ever had. He taught with enthusiasm and inspired curiosity. He was the reason I studied physics and astronomy in college and I enjoyed speaking to him about those subjects long after I left his classroom. Mr. Sandins lessons on science and life will stay with me forever. Cheeseburger first.

Mr Sandin is a big part of why I am a teacher today. I remember having him for science class, and that class being one of the few I enjoyed. He was kind, welcoming, and encouraging. Teachers play such a big role in their kids lives, and I know Mr Sandin was aware of that from his actions and words. I hope that he can rest easily knowing that for a lot of kids he made a difference.

Mr. Sandin was one of my favorite teachers, and one of the first where my older brother told me I could look forward to being in his class when I got older. He was passionate about science, discovery, and curiosity, and loved all of his students. Im fortunate to have been able to visit him several times over the last decade before he finished teaching in Hubbard, and Ill always remember him as one of the greats.
