Shirley Peterson
March 03, 2023
Shirley Jean (Brown) Peterson, age 85, passed away 11 days after her beloved husband of 60 years, Larry on Friday, March 3, 2023. They couldn’t bear to be apart from each other and now their love story can continue.
Shirley was born June 3, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa to Halley and Marie Brown. She met the love of her life, Larry Gene Peterson, when they both worked for Langan Paper Company in downtown Des Moines. They were married in 1962. Shirley retired from the State of Iowa after 25 years as a purchasing agent. She loved attending her family’s baseball and softball games. She cheered on four generations of family over the years. She cherished her family above all else and loved being a wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and aunt. One of her favorite things to do was rock her grandbabies and great-grandbabies to sleep. She enjoyed hosting family dinners and holidays, sharing her baking talents with everyone. Shirley was a big Alan Jackson fan and enjoyed trips to Pella during Tulip Time with her sisters when they were still here and more recently her nieces.
She is survived by her sons, Mark (Shelley) Peterson and Scott (Laura) Peterson; grandchildren, Victoria (Zach) Grossman, Ben Peterson (Katy), Erica (Hunter) Maeder, Nathan Peterson, and Gracie Peterson; great-grandchildren, Layla, Violet, and Jameson Grossman, Harrison and Autumn Peterson, and Hattie Maeder; sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson; dear friends, Rosemary and Juan Carreon; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery after the service.

Mom you were my rock. The one that always said everything will be okay. I know that you are now okay and at peace. You and dad are together again after being apart for only 11 days. I wish I could have done more for you in your final days here with us. But the truth is the cancer was greater than I was. So just know that I love you very much and will miss you dearly.
Love Mark.

The very best mother in law and father in law a person could ever be lucky enough to have. Kindness and goodness and Love is who they were. We will miss them everyday!
