Vearl "Dude" Thompson

Dude was born on the family farm outside of Fort Dodge IA. To Jesses (Bud) and Bulah (Weigert) Thompson.
Dude lived in the Fort Dodge area until he was 12 and then he went to live with his aunt and uncle Vearl F. and Iola Thompson in Des Moines and then the Baxter IA. Area.
He was proceeded in death by both sets of parents, his wife Cyndy, three brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter. Dude is survived by two brothers, Kenneth (Linda) Thompson, Doug (Vicky) Thompson, his daughter Tammy Garr (Jeff Quade), grandchildren John Hadaway, Joey Quade and Caitlyn Quade. Great grandchildren Camden Best, Colton Miller, Paislee Quade and Flynn Quade.
Dude was a Milk Man, Vault Man, a dump truck driver, he also drove semi and low-boy. Dude’s biggest passion was driving- second only to his family. Dude was a race car driver! He started driving stock cars at the track in Newton IA. In the 70” s. Dude soon moved up to street stock and then modified! Dude was 1985 and 1986 IMCA national champion. Dude also drove Thunder cars and b-mods for a bit. Dude was best known as a loyal friend and a fierce competitor! Dude made many lifelong friends in racing. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 234. Dude retired from Elders Corp. in 2009. Dude loved to travel, spend time with his family, race and go on adventures!
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday February 11th at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines from 2pm to 3pm.
