Service Details

Sandra Kay (Jacobson) Hegland was born on November 5, 1951 in Eldora, Iowa, to Curtis and Grace Jacobson.

Sandy attended Radcliffe Community Schools, graduating in 1969. She then attended Ellsworth Jr. College.

On September 19, 1970 she married Donald Hegland. She lived in Mankato, Minnesota and Indianola before Don and Sandy built their home in rural Runnells, where they have lived for 44 years. Due to health issues, Sandy has lived at Copper Shores Villages in Pleasant Hill for the past two years. She suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

The loves of her life were her two daughters, Tracy and Tonya, and then her grandchildren, Caleb, Hannah, Canaan and Sam. Sandy loved attending all of her daughter’s school and sporting activities as well as watching them show their cats, sheep and horses. The county and state fairs were a highlight of her family’s summers and many memories were made in the show barn. Sandy adored her grandchildren and, in her eyes, they were each one simply perfect. Once they were both retired, she and Don happily filled most of their time attending all of their school and sporting events.

Sandy worked for banking institutions, including United Federal, Metabank and public accounting firm McGladrey and Pullen. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Altoona for 40 years. She was active in the Southeast Polk Women’s Club, 4-H and other school activities for the girls and grandchildren. Sandy loved creating a beautiful home and enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting. She and Don enjoyed spending time with friends, camping and riding horses.

She is survived by her husband Donald, daughter Tracy (Ryan) Beck, daughter Tonya (Josh) Cook and grandchildren, Caleb, Hannah, Canaan, and Samuel, brothers Stephen (Lydia) Jacobson and Mark (Jane) Jacobson and sister, Sherry (Kris) Wilkinson, as well as eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Jacobson and one infant daughter.

Sandy will be laid to rest at the Powers-Warren cemetery in Runnells, Ia. She is at peace and will no longer suffer from the terrible disease she has lived with. Our family extends our gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Copper Shores Village as well as Care Initiatives Hospice Care for their endless compassion and kindness for our mom.
