Michael C. Hastie

Michael C. Hastie, son of Luellen “Bud” and Vivian Hastie was born on July 17, 1952, in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed away at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, on December 26, 2022, at the age of 70 years.
Mike attended Des Moines East High School graduating in 1970. His first job was at Maury’s Grocery, and he went on to work as a meat cutter at Roadside Supermarket and Hy-Vee. In 1999, Mike became a pastor. The first church he served in was Valley Assembly of God. He pastored at First Assembly of God in Fort Dodge for 5 years as well as serving on staff at Berean Assembly of God. His love for the Lord and servant heart led him to start Bethany New Life Christian Fellowship Church. He was the founding pastor and led them through a building project, serving the communities of Altoona and Pleasant Hill. Mike most recently attended Heritage Assembly of God where he preached and taught classes.
He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Phyllis I. Ballard, on August 12, 1972 and to this union one child was born: Kathleen.
Mike enjoyed traveling, road trips, turkey and pheasant hunting, fishing and golfing. He loved owning a bass boat and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers fan. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. Most of all, he served the Lord with his whole heart as a pastor and loved to minister to others.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; daughter, Kathleen (Michael) Gonzalez; grandson, Ethan Michael Gonzalez; siblings, Becky (Dave) Leedy; Matt Hastie; and Laura (Paul) Starkweather; other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luellen “Bud” and Vivian Hastie; nephew, Michael David Leedy.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., in Des Moines. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at Heritage Assembly of God, 5051 NE 5th St, in Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

To my amazing Uncle Mike. I am selfishly saddened by your departure but I am so happy for you to be with the Lord. I will miss you but soon we will all be together again. I am so sorry to my aunt and cousin for their loss. I love you all.

We are so privileged to call Pastor Hastie our friend. He always went out of his way to see how our family was doing. He was a great teacher and pastor. He is dearly missed. Our prayers are with his family for comfort and strength. We love you.

My wife and I are praying for the whole family. Our hearts are with you during this difficult time. On one hand we rejoice he sees his Savior, but we also know, nothing can replace such a wonderful Pastor, husband, father, brother, and just a great man.
