Craig "Kernal" Kern
September 21, 2022
Craig “Kernal” William Kern, 62, passed away September 21, 2022, at Methodist Hospital.
Craig was born on August 31, 1960, to Maxine and Edward Kern in Des Moines, Iowa.
Craig proudly served the city of Des Moines for 32 years with the Des Moines Fire Department. He was a Southsider his entire life, a 1979 Lincoln High School graduate, and a 1984 UNI graduate majoring in Psychology. After college, he met the love of his life, Cheryl Annette Karsten, and they married on May 14, 1988, in Sumner, Iowa. Kernal embodied the term “gentle giant” and was tremendously respected by those privileged to have worked with him. He spent all of his careers working out of downtown Station #1. He is the longest-serving Haz Mat team member for over 30 years.
Craig earned his fire specialist degree in 1998 and received the City’s Meritorious Service Award with a key to the city as well as Firehouse Magazine’s Heroism and Community Service Award. He was promoted to Fire Engineer in 2001.
He was a jack of all trades and a master of all! He was a daily weight lifter. While raising his children, he was a coach in all their sporting activities. Many of their friends will remember him as a coach and mentor. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed hunting deer, turkey, and wild hogs with his sons and friends. Craig and Cheryl loved spending time at their lake home and Craig fished every chance he got. Kernal was humble, ethical, trustworthy, loyal, and a committed family man who gave to all who needed his help. His last gift was the selfless act of being an organ and tissue donor.
Craig is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Cheryl; sons, Kort Edward Kern and Clay Karsten Kern; brother, Chris (Debra) Kern; sister-in-law, Carol Kern; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Maxine; his brother, Cole; and his sister, Colette.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 2022, and also at the funeral home. Burial with Firefighter honor guard will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery after the service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be distributed to a charity of their choice at a later date in loving memory of Craig.

so sorry to hear of Craigs passing at such a young age. he was our right fielder on the Orioles with me at fort Des Moines senior league. I remember what a gentle soul he was and a pretty good athlete.Lost touch over the years but his father was a great teacher and brother Chris a great classmate of mine. A wonderful family and I am not surprised to read about the man Craig came to be. I only wish I could live up to his example. I am so sorry for your loss Chris and I am always available if there is anything I can do to help,I know you will miss him and cherish his memory.

Cheryl,
I am not sure we ever met but I took care of Craig for 25 yrs or so. He was a very likable, pleasant man and we often talked of his job. It was an honor to care for such a brave man. He continued to work despite some occupational health issues. He is an example of how selfless we all should try to be.
I always call spouses after a person dies but I retired 4-1-22 and don't have access to medical records anymore. Craig was doing pretty well before I retired.
I would really like to know more about why he passed away.
If you could someday send me a brief email on the circumstances of his death I would appreciate that very much.
I will continue to pray for his soul and your family's peace.

There were a few moments in time where Craig lived a true firefighter's dream; he charged into a burning smoky building to save a child. If you dwell on what it takes to do that think bravery, knowledge, stamina and those terms mean physical and mental preparation. In those few moments he and Ed Duckworth and others brought out more than one child and started CPR demonstrating that the DMFD didn't care what color skin you had they were going to do everything in there power to help those in need of it. Our paramedics do similar moments everyday; firefighters at fires seldom. I don't want to this to be a commercial. I want people to know that Craig epitomized a FireFighter dedicated to doing the right thing. It was a very very sad day and still is for me when I got news he had died. I worked on the same division but at a different station, yet filled in at station 1 many times and got to know him well. My recollections are based on personal observation and others and from media. I hope others that were at that fire on Kingman Circle to fill in the blanks. I pray that the family will enjoy a happy future.

Bufflehead Drive will not be the same at the lake without Craig, the kindest and most helpful neighbor ever. It was our honor to call him a friend. We will miss him greatly. Cheryl, we love you and are willing to do whatever we can to help you. May God grant you, Kort and Clay peace during this most difficult time.
