Sheila Hartung
August 13, 2022
Sheila P. Hartung was born on July 29, 1936, in Long Island, New York. She moved with her parents, June and David Patterson, and her sister, Pat, to Des Moines when she was 12. She graduated from North High School, and then married Roger W. Hartung on September 2, 1954. Sheila and Roger had four boys, twins Kirk and Kent, Greg, and Scott in less than three years. Nine years later they adopted a daughter, Wendy, and brought her home when she was five days old.
She was a loving mother who devoted her time and energies to our family. Sheila was very active in her kids’ school activities, including sports, music, and theater. She welcomed their friends into her home. She volunteered in the school PTA and at Lutheran Hospital. She painted beautiful ceramic pieces, particularly nativity sets, which she gave as Christmas presents to her children.
The family spent many years going to their house at Clear Lake, often with friends, with lots of swimming, skiing, and fishing.
Sheila and Roger started taking their family to the YMCA Family Camp in Boone in 1966, and attended for many years, while convincing neighbors to join them at Y Camp for a week of fun every August.
She was always proud of her family, and her Irish heritage. She travelled to Ireland several times to visit relatives. Sheila enjoyed long conversations with friends. She was an avid bridge player for many decades.
Sheila is survived by her children, Kirk (Jo Renee), Kent (Colleen), Greg, Scott, and Wendy; her grandchildren Erika (Matt), Adam (Katie), Brian (Rose), Julie, Christopher (Sidniann); Anne (Josh), Michael (Jason), Mary Kate, Emily, Heather (Nick), Darby, and Tate; and 12 great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Saydel Eagle Endowment, or Five Fires Foundation.
Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 21 @ 2-4 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 4 p.m., both at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens on Monday, Aug. 22 @ 10 a.m. Online condolences can be made at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I went to Warren Harding and North High Schools with Sheila. I remember when she moved here from New York and lived in Oak Park. I would see her at our class reunions.
I want to express my sympathy to each of you in her family.
Sincerely, Lois Gray

I have known Sheila for over 50 years. My mom (Trellis), Sheila and I went to exercise classes together. (early 70s). Not quite sure who was supporting who-but fun, laughing and fresh fruit was always involved. I felt happy to be included in their friendship.

I did not know your mother, but Greg has always been the go to guy for snow plowing, mechanical work, golf, he is a member of our family also. Your mother did a good job on her sons ethics. I'm very sorry for your families loss.
