Betty Sargent Bishop passed away on August 1, 2022 at the age of 105 and one month. Betty was delighted to celebrate her recent June birthday with family, balloons, flowers and chocolate cake.

A life-long resident of Des Moines, Betty was the eldest daughter of Ernest and Florence Sargent. She was a proud East High Scarlet, graduating in the class of 1935. After briefly attending the University of Iowa, Betty married Willard L. Bishop in 1941. They celebrated 70 years together welcoming three children to their close-knit family: David Bishop (Beth), Bill Bishop (Mary) and Jane Fogg (Eric). Betty loved her six grandchildren: Doug Bishop, Dawn Reed, Bryan Fogg, Karen Fogg, Lauren Erbskorn and Jamie Bishop and her extended Sargent Family.

Over her long life, Betty devoted herself to community, family and dear friends. For decades she was a donor and volunteer with Blank Children’s Hospital. Betty served as president of the Blank Guild and later as a member of the Iowa Methodist Hospital Board of Trustees. Other organizations which drew her to community service were the Des Moines Women’s Club, Wesley Acres Guild, and Grace United Methodist Church. Betty belonged to Chapter HH, PEO for 58 years and was a member of Ding Darling Questers, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Eastern Star.

Betty leaves a legacy of giving to improve the lives of others and passed that expectation of philanthropy and service to her family. Her favorite “job” however was
mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Always curious about the world around her, she followed current events and never hesitated to speak her mind. Betty also had a great appreciation for natural beauty, enjoying trees of all kinds and outdoor activities especially at the family’s Clear Lake home.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Willard, son Bill, parents, her brother Richard Sargent and sister Joanne Beasley. Per Betty’s wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.

The family will gather for a private celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial gifts to: Blank Children’s Hospital or Friends of Des Moines Parks / A Tree for the Future. Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
