Joel Patrick Schmidt
July 26, 2022
Joel Schmidt passed away July 26, 2022 in Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 4, 1956 to Daisy Marie (Parris) and Evans Schmidt in Audubon, Iowa where he grew up on the family farm. He graduated from Audubon High School in 1975.
Joel married Charlotte Swanson on January 8, 1977 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Audubon, IA, where they were members during their years in Audubon. They lived briefly in the country until moving to town in 1982.
Joel worked at the Audubon Coop during high school and then continued his work there after graduation. He was involved in feed sales, inventory, and grain contracts in the role of assistant location manager. In 1992, he helped start AMVC Nutritional Services and worked there the rest of his career, becoming a partner in AMVC in 2005. Joel worked with a wide variety of people and companies, managing the feeding and nutrition of pig farms spread across multiple Iowa counties and states. He loved his work and the people that he worked with. He was very proud of the feed mill to be constructed near Audubon later this year.
Joel also invested in a number of rental properties in Audubon and Arizona. He personally took care of some of the lawns and maintenance in Audubon - as well as the tenants themselves!
In 2007, Joel and Charlotte moved to Clive, IA so they could be closer to their family. Joel commuted to his work from there, hitting several deer in the process.
Joel enjoyed biking and traveling with Charlotte, family vacations and captaining the boat at Lake of the Ozarks, Cyclone football tailgating, and family BBQ’s as the master griller. He disliked over-cooked meat, but would leave a few pieces for the “well done” fans, like Charlotte. He made a point to attend any and all events his grandkids were participating in.
He enjoyed hosting family and friends and was always the first to ask if you needed anything. He was a wonderful communicator, asking questions and listening to what you’ve been up to. His quick, witty comments would brighten your mood or make you laugh.
More than anything, Joel just loved taking care of his family. He was the best Husband, Dad, Papa, and Friend that anyone could ever want.
Joel will be dearly missed by his wife, Charlotte Schmidt of Clive, IA; children, Cory (Jessie) Schmidt of Adel, IA, Miki (Nate) Weber of Waukee, IA and Jeremy (Kristy) Schmidt of Urbandale, IA; grandchildren, Gwyneth Schmidt, Siena Schmidt, Garrett Weber, Lexi Weber, Caden Greening; sister, Linda (Mori) Shimabukuro of Dothan, AL; mother-in-law, Doreen Swanson of Ankeny, IA; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Sandy Nelson (Pat Horan) of Ankeny, IA, Bev (Tom) Atkins of Johnston, IA, Joyce Schmidt of Omaha, NE; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Mike Schmidt, and his father-in-law, Bill Swanson.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Avenue in Clive with a short gathering one hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hope Ministries in loving memory of Joel. Online condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

My sincere condolences to the Schmidt family. I had the great pleasure of working with Joel over the past 20 years. He was a business associate of the highest caliber but more importantly a great friend! A class act to the core. Truly one of a kind. I am heartsick over this monumental loss but so grateful for the privilege of knowing him. You are all in my prayers. God bless Joel Schmidt. See you again at the gates, my good friend.
