Elsie Hayes

Elsie died February 7, 2007 at Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She lived in Des Moines all her life and was born January 26, 1914 and was 93. The funeral will be held at 10am Saturday, February 10 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 6-8pm Friday at the funeral home.
Elsie was a graduate of Lincoln High School and an enthusiastic alumnus, loved crocheting, and fishing in Canada. She was an avid cribbage player, a baseball fan who loved the Cubs and loved people. She made many close friends at Fleur Heights and thought of the staff as part of her family.
Elsie is survived by a daughter, Sylvia, and son-in-law, Bob Mendenhall, whom she thought of as her son; two grandsons, Bill (Connie) and Bob Jr. (Juanita) Mendenhall; eight great-grandchildren, all of Des Moines, and a special niece, Karen Kellner, of Texas.
Her husband, Harold “Whitey” Hayes, parents, Dick and Euva Burgess, brother, Ernie Burgess, all of Des Moines, two sisters, Bernice Humphreys of California and Kathryn Hendricks of Texas, preceded her in death.
The family would like to thank all of the special people from Iowa Hospice and Fleur Heights Care Center for the loving care provided to Elsie and her family the past few years.
