Byron Harry Barrett, age 69, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his wife daughter and one grandson on Monday, June 20, 2022.

Byron was born January 31, 1953 in LaHarpe, Illinois to Albert and Wilma (Rouse) Barrett. Byron grew up with his brother’s, sister’s and parents in Illinois Missouri and Iowa. Byron came to Des Moines in 1974 where he lived with roommates and his brother at times. In 1978 he met the love of his life Marilyn L McDonough. Byron and Marilyn met at Skate Country, as they both enjoyed roller skating. Byron and Marilyn were married on July 21, 1979 in Des Moines. They bought a house on the north side of Des Moines where they raised their two daughters. Byron went back to DMACC and received his GED, then went on to earn his AA at NEC. Byron worked many different jobs doing what he liked to call sanitation engineer. Byron Worked for 18 years at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical center, as an environmental services worker. Byron was known there by many people and all say that he was friendly and talkative. Byron retired From Unity point in December of 2020. Byron was known for his many different facial expressions.

He enjoyed Fishing, Camping, Gardening, riding his tractor, collecting Mallard Ducks, Taking trips with his family, and his cat Sheba. At any given time on the weekend when Byron was off you could find him out in the yard. Byron enjoyed making his yard look beautiful and he enjoyed using his tractor to mow the grass. Byron also liked working in his garage on his cars when he was younger.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years Marilyn Barrett; daughters, Shannon and Jennifer; grandsons, Cael and Dakota; granddaughters, Destiny, Natalia, and Jaliyah. Brothers; Gary Barrett (Laurie) Newton, IA, Norman Barrett, Utah and Mark Barrett (Kristen) Kansas. Sister Lisa (Barrett) Vanest. Many nieces and nephews.

Byron was preceded in death by his parents; Wilma (Rouse) Barrett and Albert Barrett, His brother’s Laverne Barrett, and Dale Barrett, Sister Janice (Barrett) Kilpatrick. Grandparents, aunts and uncles. Niece Cassandra Vanest.

According to Byron’s wishes, he will be cremated and there will be a celebration of life at Indianola Church of Christ on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family in memory of Byron.
