John Coleman, 80, passed away at Mercy Hospice in Johnston on Sunday, November 1, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. A memorial mass will be held Thursday November, 5, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in West Des Moines with burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2009, also at Sacred Heart in the Parish Center, with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m.

John was born November 17, 1928, in Melrose, Iowa. He was a retired letter carrier for the US Postal Service, and served his country in the Army from 1946-1949. John was a member of Sacred Heart Church since 2006, and previously had been an active member and supporter of Christ the King Church from 1958-2006. He enjoyed golfing, camping, boating, carpentry and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends – especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis Coleman of West Des Moines, and three children: Steve (Marilyn)Coleman of West Des Moines, Julie Davis (John Marburg) of Des Moines, and Linda (Randy) Lancaster of Prole, and daughter-in-law Anita Burke of Ohio. He is also survived by his siblings and their families: Mary (Hank) Hannam of Urbandale, Paul (Jeanette) Coleman of Milwaukee, Gerald (Arlene) Coleman of Urbandale, & Teresa Saverice of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his grandchildren & great-grandchildren: Andrea & Shaun Thompson (Lexie, Chase, Gabby & Kael); Jonah & Cori Coleman (Baby Coleman due in June); Jeff & Lori Coleman (Matthias John); Tim Davis; Jenna Coleman; Taylor Davis (Lilly); Chelsea Davis; Wade & Amy Lancaster (Josh & Ben); Joe & Stacey Lancaster (Kaden, Conner & Baby due in May); and Andrew Marburg. John was preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph and Teresa (Sinnott) Coleman of Albia, his brother James B. Coleman who was killed in action in WW II, and by his two sons James G. and Daniel, and two daughters Mary Frances and Lisa. He was also preceded in death by his sons-in-law Tim Davis and Richard Dennis.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy Hospice, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, or Christ the King Catholic Church. The family would like to thank all the wonderful, caring staff at Mercy Hospice and Father Michael Hess for their loving care of John and his family.
