Mary Eleanor Gilroy, age 99, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at her home. She was born on February 25, 1923, in Eldon, Iowa, to Charles and Emma (Gieg) Knight. Mary graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1941.
Mary worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as supervisor in Ottumwa and later in Des Moines. She also worked for the school board in Amos & Willard Elementary. Mary later began working for Iowa Lutheran Hospital as a dietary aide and retired in 1985. Mary was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Ladies Auxiliary #738. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking and knitting for friends and family. Mary loved working concession stands during the fair, parking cars, and square dancing. She brought joy and light to so many and will be sorely missed.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children David Gilroy and Cheryl Smithhart, 7 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-great-grandchildren, and her sister Willa Little.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband William Gilroy, daughter Linda Kay Gilroy, five siblings, son-in-law Cleo, grandson Brian, and great-grandson Stephon.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 10, 2022, with funeral service following at 11:00 a.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.

So sorry to hear of Marys passing. Ive known & worked with Mary for many years through VFW Auxiliary. From installations, Loyalty Day parades, chairman for state meetings, to being a great mentor, Mary always did a great job. R.I.P. Mary
