Benjamin Edward Voss
April 22, 2022
Benjamin Edward Voss was born on June 28, 1976 to Janice (Heitmeier) and Ronald Voss in Iowa City, Iowa. He grew up there and attended Iowa City High School, graduating in 1994. Ben was a standout basketball player, and continued his basketball career at Kirkwood Community College.
Ben enjoyed everything to do with the outdoors, camping and fishing just to name a few. While Ben struggled with anxiety, he dreamed of the day where he could just lay down on a picnic table and look at the stars and let the worries of the world melt away. On April 22, 2022 Ben died at the age of 45, joining the stars he spent many nights looking at.
He was a good friend to all – patient, kind, caring, and enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He will be missed by so many friends and family.
Ben is remembered by his mom, Janice (Heitmeier) Voss; sisters, Angela (Neil) Berns, Laurie (David) Jansen, Kim (Dave) Mills, and Renae (Vince) Fix; two aunts and an uncle; cousins; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by death by his dad, Ron Voss.
A memorial service will be held on Monday May 9, 2022 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines at 11:00 a.m. The service will be livestreamed at

Ben, our loving memory of the adorable little boy, "snips and snails and puppy dogs tails" endures. Best friends with our children in happier and gentler times. Peace be with you and your loving family.

I have so many memories with Ben from 1988 to 1998 at Southeast, City High, and U of I. They were very formative years in my life, and he made a real imprint sharing shenanigans and good times I will never forget. A few include our second period breakfast outings at Hy Vee, camping in all kinds of places like the Res, MacBride, and the Oxarks, having Pancheros before and after downtown bars, and skipping Psych class to play Dr. Who pinball in the dorm basement. While glad for the memories, I am so terribly saddened at the loss of him in this world. He will be missed. My sympathies.

I am saddened to hear about Bens passing. I worked with Ben at Wells Fargo and we would often go to the mall at lunch. He was so tall that I always told him I would get shin splints trying to keep up with him. I enjoyed working with Ben and getting to know him. He will be missed by many. Fly high my friend. 💔

Benny boy was my work husband at Wells Fargo and people called us Jen-jamin because Bennifer was already taken by Ben and J Lo :) He was one of the few reasons I didnt mind working at Wells, he made my day better almost always but he was an even more amazing friend beyond those walls. He had the most infectious smile and biggest hugs to give no matter how much time had passed since the last time you had seen him. We were partner in crimes at one point in our lives, whether we were just hanging out, skywalk shenanigans from the Royal Mile to the Iowa Energy games, or checking out women! We had so much fun when we were together no matter what we were doing. I wish I could have had seen that smile, heard that laugh and gotten a hug one more time from that genuine, loving and kind soul that was always up for an adventure. I wish he knew how much he brightened so many of our lives just by being around. RIP buddy, damn you are going to be missed. Love you, JC

Oh Ben, I am so sad. I loved working with you! I knew if it was Friday the 13th you would take the day off from work. I really missed not seeing after I retired. I always enjoyed your company. Good bye my friend I know you have found peace with our Lord.
