SSG Chris J. Vance, 25, currently serving in the US Army at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, passed away on October 25, 2009. Chris was born on July 28, 1984 in Oxnard, California.

He was a great athlete that enjoyed water polo, running, boogie boarding, being at the beach and spending time with his family, especially his children. At Ft. Bragg Chris was known for his amazing athleticism and fitness, always being the last one standing after drills. He loved his job and loved serving his country.

SSG Vance served as the Master Fitness Trainer for Entry Level and Re-Classification students in the Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Courses.

SSG Vance's military education includes Ranger School, Airborne School, Air Assault School, the Combat Life Saver course, Warriors Leaders course, SERE School, SFAS, and Special Operations Language Training where he became proficient in the Indonesian language.

SSG Vance's awards and decorations include three Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, both the Global War on Terrorism Service and Expeditionary Medals, the Army Service Ribbon, the Army Overseas Ribbon, the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Parachutist's Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

He is survived by his children Keyoshi and Lelani, his siblings Michael, Rhonda (David), Roxanne and Brandon Vance, his parents Wes and Lela Vance, his grandmother Rita Hunt, his aunt Cee-Cee Curtis-Vasquez, his uncle Donnie San Nicolas, his two best friends, SSG James Burley Evans and Jeremy "Opie" Edwards and his many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather William Hunt.

Funeral services will be at 12 Noon Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, with burial following at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. The family will greet friends from 5-8 P.M. Monday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chris J. Vance memorial fund with proceeds going to his children.
