Wayne Arthur Schuler

Wayne Arthur Schuler, 99, passed away February 15, 2022 at Trinity Luther Park in Des Moines, Iowa.

Wayne was born in Barlow, North Dakota on June 9, 1922 to Grace (Willet) and John Schuler. After high school graduation, Wayne enlisted in the Navy, where he served during WWII. In 1944, he came back on leave and married Shirley Jean Peterson. The couple lived in Florida and California while Wayne was in the military. Afterwards, they relocated back to Iowa where the family grew to include Robert born in 1946, Shirley born in 1949, and finally Mary arriving in 1956.

Wayne worked in the grocery industry and later moved to sales where he was a distributor of goods well into his 90’s. In his free-time he enjoyed golfing, riding and betting on horses, gardening for his community, and playing Santa Clause to those in need in the town of Atlantic. He was also known for his epic water fights!

This kind and generous man will be deeply missed by his children, Robert (Susan) Schuler, Shirley Paterson (Bill Barbour) and Mary (Greg) Gilkeson; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Maxine Corderman and Marie Waskel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings; grandson, Austen; and his beloved wife, Jean.

Funeral services will be held at Saylorville Church, 6429 NW 6th Drive in Des Moines on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in the Spring.
