Service Details

Betty Mackin went home to be with her Lord on January 30, 2022. Betty was born in Des Moines on August 24, 1926 to parents Harry Dixon and Dorothy Swartztrauber. When Betty was twelve days old they moved to Pella, Iowa where Harry was instrumental in starting what is today the Pella Window Company. He designed the mechanism that made the roll screen possible.

In 1936, they moved back to Des Moines where Betty lived for the rest of her life. She graduated from East High School where she was active in theater and met Billy E. Mackin whom she married December 29, 1945. She was a devoted wife and mother of five very busy children.

Betty lived a life committed to the Lord and was an active member of Grandview Park Baptist Church where she taught a girls Sunday School class and later children’s church. Her dining room table was a popular place where she hosted many missionaries and preachers for Sunday dinner.

In her later years she and Billy joined the Norwoodville Baptist Church where they came to know and love the members of that congregation.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Billy, brother Don Dixon, a sister Nadine, grandson Cory Crutchfield, and great-grandson Gage Crutchfield.

Survivors include her sister Helen Poggenpohl, and daughters Candy Crutchfield and husband Don, Becky Smith and husband Brook, Lorrie Hale, and sons James Mackin and Perry Mackin. She leaves behind nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Monday, February 7, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 N. W. 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. and the funeral will be at 10 a.m. with Ron Burkhart officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Norwoodville Baptist Church.
