Steven James Newsom
January 13, 2022
Steven James Newsom, 71, passed away on January 13, 2022. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. followed by a visitation until 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA.
Steve was born October 12, 1950 in Des Moines, IA to Leonora and Marshall Newsom. He graduated from Hoover High School in 1969 and attended Boone Community College. Steve owned and operated many businesses over the years but his passion was working as a commercial real estate broker at Newsom Realty. Doing the more challenging and complicated cases was Steve’s favorite. He had an inquisitive mind and relished figuring out the various aspects of a project.
In his free time, Steve enjoyed traveling to many locations but Palm Springs and southern Texas were his favorite, where he had made many friends. He cherished time with his daughter, Christie and her family and would frequently sit with the children. With his delightful sense of humor, he always joked that his grandchildren were taking care of him.
Steve was kind, funny, and loved well. He had a remarkable gift of being present and in the moment when he spent time with you.
“Remember, it’s not your monetary wealth that matters in the end, but how many lives you touched on your journey.” We are so thankful for all the lives Steve touched on his journey.
He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Christie (Andrew) Steiger; his grandchildren, Jaxxon, Ellie and Gabe; and his brothers, John (Cheryl), Rod and Bruce Newsom. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Terry Newsom; and sister, Norma Jean Newsom.
Memorials may be directed to the family and condolences expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I also met Steve in Boone in 1969. We became friends and eventually roommates. We hitch hiked to California and back in 10 days once for no apparent reason. Fun guy to be around, please accept my condolences.

I am a cousin to Steve. My mother was Steves aunt, Maxine Newsom Blackton and I am her daughter, Donna Rae Nash. My heartfelt love and sympathy goes out to all this family. The last time I saw Steve he was a little guy. Sounds like he grew into a swell guy.

Steve and I first met in August of 1969 when we were freshmen at DMACC Boone Campus. We quickly became friends. Over the many years Steve and I had so much fun and shared many fun and unique experiences that made for many treasured memories. I was always impressed with and enjoyed his quick wit and clever humor. He was kind,,generous,,and knew no strangers. He loved life and lived it to the fullest and left us with many endearing memories.

I met Steve in 1977 while working at Pioneer Auto (used car dealer at 14th & Grand, downtown Des Moines).
Over the next 40+ years our paths crossed and intertwined many times as we both spend much of our work lives dealing with real estate.
Steve was always working on a project or putting a deal together (exactly what he was born to do).
He was a very kind and warm person who left this world better than he found it. I am honored to have known him.

Steve, was family to us, and we loved his family as well. He helped us and helped my dear mother after she lost my Daddy to cancer. He knew she was having financial trouble and he helped her sell many rental houses and didn't charge her ! What a sweet friend he was !! Doug and I live in Phx.Az. and would love to be at the visitation..but can't. Our Condolences to his family !! God bless the family in their sorrow and grief. Steve will be greatly missed by all who knew him !! ~'Charlie' & Doug
