Charles Sigmund, Sr., age 80, passed away at his home on January 5, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was born in Des Moines on April 28, 1941, the son of William “John” and Ruth (Custer) Sigmund.

Charles grew up in Bondurant and graduated from Bondurant-Farrar High School. He was united in marriage to Judith Michael, and in 1979, they made their home in Elkhart. Charles and Judy shared 45 wonderful years together until her passing.

Charles was a community minded man who enjoyed serving on the city council for Bondurant and acting as leader for Boy Scout Troop 10. Charles was also past master of King David Lodge 407 and was a member of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine in Altoona.

A true outdoorsman, Charles loved fishing, camping, gardening, and canning. In more recent years, he enjoyed gambling at Meskwaki Casino in Tama, IA and spending time with his family and friends around the campfire.

Charles is survived by his children, Crystal (Paul) Edwards, Charles (Kelly) Sigmund, Jr., William Sigmund, Alan (Anna) Sigmund, Lawrence (Kay) Sigmund, and Susan Sigmund-Maness; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, David (Helen) Sigmund and Donald (Ruth) Sigmund; sister, Dorothy Wright; sisters-in-law, Vicki Sigmund and Karen Sigmund; as well as a host of other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents, William “John” and Ruth Sigmund; the mother of his children, Judy Sigmund; second wife, Mary Sigmund; son, Brian Sigmund; stepson, Jeff Nelson; siblings, John Sigmund, Robert Sigmund, Richard Sigmund, Virginia Sigmund, and Susan Hart; and a brother-in-law, Jack Wright.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW, where the family will receive visitors Monday evening from 5-8 p.m.
