He served in the United States Navy near the end of WWII and was stationed in China. Robert married Lois Marguerite Freuck on July 29, 1950. Robert and Lois were married for 39 years before her passing in 1989. They were long time members of Christ the King Catholic Church.

Robert was a Certified Public Accountant beginning his career with Dial Finance in Des Moines and retiring as President of Norwest Mortgage in 1989. He enjoyed many interests including fishing, traveling, gardening and working on his farms.

Robert was an incredibly generous man and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Robert and Lois's family home in Norwalk was the meeting place for his children and grandchildren where decades of dinners and celebrations created great happiness and loving memories that will always be treasured. After he was diagnosed with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's his quality of life would eventually fade, but his tenacious spirit never faltered. He was a man of immeasurable strength who fought to remain on this earth with his loving family for longer than was ever believed possible. His example of a successful, loving marriage and incredibly successful career inspires his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren each day.

Robert's family would like to thank the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center for the nearly eight years of high quality care provided for him. Memorial contributions may be directed toward the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Iowa, located at 1730 28th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa 50266, in memory of Robert.
