Robert L. Burget
December 26, 2021
Robert Leon Burget passed away peacefully at age 95 at the Carlisle Care Center on December 26, 2021. He was born in Des Moines, IA on August 26, 1926, and moved with his family to Altoona, IA at age 4 so that his father could help run the family business, Burget Mill.
Bob was very community minded and always ready to help others. He was elder emeritus at Altoona Christian Church, served 8 years on the city council, and served as assistant fire chief over 25 years when the department was all volunteer. Bob was an accomplished trumpet player and played a mean boogie-woogie on the piano.
Bob’s life’s work was at the Burget Mill, where he was owner-operator, first with his dad and later with his son, Tim. He even passed up an opportunity to play professional football because the Mill paid better!
Bob is survived by his children, Christine Fisher, Terry Hopkins, Timothy Burget, Cynthia Gattorna, and Bradley Burget; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren; as well as other loving family and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Grace Burget; his wife of nearly 50 years, B. Margaret “Mickey” Burget; and his second wife, Vayla Burget, who blessed him with love a second time. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Kesler and Lula Grandstaff Still; and grandsons, David Burget and Sean Gattorna.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2022, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW, where the family will greet visitors from 1-2 p.m. Interment will take place at Altoona Cemetery following the service.

So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a good man. I have many fond memories of camping trips with the Burgets around Iowa and fishing trips to South Dakota. Lots of fun! I know he was a godly man so I know where he is. May God bless his family as they grieve his loss. Love, Ron and Becky (Stanley) Bizzell

I have many fond memories of my Uncle Bob who was only 8 years my senior, and always a kind and thoughtful mentor. I spent several summers working on his hay baling crew during my teen years and we had many laughs about the unexpected challenges nature provided. I remember his unfailing patience with his crew of teenagers. Over the years as he faced many more significant challenges, he continued to show that same kindness and consideration. He will be greatly missed.

I have such fond memories of the whole Burgett family at church, horsing around with Terry and growing up in our great little town. I am praying for your comfort and peace.
